Tournaments

Online gaming tournaments allow several players to sign up and play a featured game over a fixed time period to compete for cash and prizes. The competition and opportunity to make money encourages players to play for longer and more frequently, and the subsequent increase in gaming traffic and bets results in greater turnover and profits for the operator. Note: gaming tournaments are not the same as ESport tournaments, where teams or individual players compete by playing a featured game under supervised conditions to win a share of a prize pool.

Platform operators have control over a tournament's characteristics, for example:

• Win conditions
  What triggers a win, such as a high score or the number of games played, and the text to display when the tournament is won.
• Time period
  The start and end dates and times to 1) publicise the tournament, and 2) make it available.
• Repeating values
  Specify repeating tournaments, for example monthly or every weekend.
• Leaderboard
  Whether or not to display a leaderboard.
• Prizes and jackpots
  What combination of prize and/or jackpot is paid to the winner.
  

Note that it is not always desirable to display a leaderboard, as a very high leading score can discourage others from signing up.
